I would like to tell you about my school and what I do..
I am studying sign language in Umeå. It's a very nice school outside the city, in the woods, just by the sea. In my class there are nine students. We have all been studying three terms and my goal is to be a sign language interpreter. It is a hard education and very hard to get in, so I am hoping for the best. When I am finish with this term, I have two more years left, and then I can start working as an interprenter. I love my class and the teachers are great. They (the teachers) are all deaf, so we learn very quickly and must use the language all the time, which is really good.
Sign language have not always been accepted, and still in some countrys it's forbidden to sign! Sweden was he first country in the world that accepted sign language as a real language and allowed it in deafschools. Before 1981 the teachers talked to the deaf students and they had to talk too!! Not sign!! I am glad the people in Sweden changed their minds and I do hope some day, every country in the world will do the same. Deaf people are as valuable as everybody else, and they too deserve a good life. Unfortunately there are many people saying deaf people are disabled and should not exist! Well, I say it's the communitys and the world that makes them disabled. It is the "hearing world" that has problems with communication. Has anyone ever heard of a pen and paper?!! It is NOT hard to communicate!!
I think everyone should learn some signs. It would be very nice to be able to as least say your own name, if you someday meet a deaf person, don't you agree with me?
... Learn sign language now! ...
